MasterCard v/s or Visa Card

abcd

Whenever we apply for a credit card, we are sometimes asked by the credit card bank or credit card organization about which brand of credit card should we opt for? - a MasterCard or a Visa or sometimes even an American Express (AMEX) card.
It is important to understand that Visa & MasterCard are payment systems instead of credit cards by themselves and they rely on banks all around the world to issue credit cards that use their payment system. From this they take a % of the amount charged to retailers to take payments via these cards. In return the retailers get a certain degree of assurance that the goods / services they have sold will be paid for. The shopkeepers or establishments also have to have the credit card payment acceptance, otherwise the customer will not bring any business to them.
American Express are slightly different in that they run their own payment system and issue cards themselves - both charge cards and credit cards.
So the big question that a credit card customer might face is which type of credit card do you choose?

Visa

Visa is probably the largest payment network in the world with a claimed 20 million outlets in 150 countries around the world accepting a Visa credit card. Visa is issued by 20,000 banks and there are over 1 billion cards in circulation

MasterCard

MasterCard is fast becoming the number 1 payment system in the world. with 25,000 banks issuing cards and cards being accepted in 210 countries around the world. There are an estimated 22 million locations around the globe where mastercard is accepted.

Amex

American Express operate in 130 countries around the world and is one of the most famous names in financial services. It is also the worlds largest travel agency,

So which do you choose? We'll the choice between Visa and MasterCard is easy. Don't have any choice. Both visa and MasterCard are widely accepted all around the world and you’re unlikely to find too many outlets that will accept Visa and not MasterCard and vise versa. Some UK banks give you the option of choosing either and some may only offer a Visa or MasterCard - decide on the values of the card itself - interest rates, cashback etc rather than whether its a Visa or MasterCard.

With American Express it’s more difficult choice. Its not a widely accepted as Visa and MasterCard in the UK although the number of outlets are growing. But if you like the products and services offered by Amex then don't feel put off by this. most major shops and restaurants accept the card and if you travel abroad regularly it can be used in most places - especially in the USA.

Cahoot has attempted to put in some fresh ideas into banking. Cahoot is a part of the Abbey National group. However, they are an Internet only bank with no high street presence. Their innovative approach and low costs mean they can offer exceptionally low rates across all their products.

The Cahoot credit card really has one of the lowest standard rates available in the UK. Post office Credit Card

abcd

The Post Office credit card is a brand credit card from the great British institution - the Post Office! The post office has, for a long time, offered various financial products like savings, insurance and loans and now they have ventured into the business of credit cards with their brand name offering of the post office credit card.

The big difference with the post office credit card is that it is a double use card meaning you can use it as a credit card, with competitive rates or if you need to make a big purchase you can pre-arrange a personal loan on the card which carries a much lower rate of interest as compared to the regular purchases. You will still have to make a minimum payment but pre-arranging a loan for a purchase on the card carries an interest rate of just 6.8% pa. So if you wanted to buy, say a new refrigerator on your card, you could buy the Refrigerator as usual and then simply call the post office who will arrange for it to be put on the lower "loan" rate. You then have to pay that amount off in a 12 month period which is sufficient enough for you to repay it in easy installments.

You could obviously use the Post Office credit card like any normal credit card. They offer a great 0% on balance transfers for up to 8 months and 0% for 3 months on purchases and then a standard rate of just 14.9% APR, which is really on the lower side compared to what is offered by other cards in the UK market.

Another great benefit is for travellers - The post office are one of only a handfull of credit card providers who charge no commission on foreign currency purchases. Simple great offer!

General Online Comments and reviews for Natwest Student Credit Card

1.
I applied for a Natwest credit card, as my student account is with them. I received the first statement and paid it in full. Then just before I received the second statement I received a letter saying the card had to be cut up and returned without any explanation as to why. Pretty confused as to what I had done wrong, I phoned them, only be to told they had changed their criteria and I no longer fitted it. They refused to discuss what the actual problem was. The limit on the credit card was only £350, and I was not up to that limit. I had used it a few times when I was skint, as all students usually are, to buy food and petrol. My advice is, if you are looking for a student credit card that you can use when your student loan has run out and your funds are low, Natwest are really not a good idea.

2.
I am first year student and just applied for a credit card from Natwest with a credit limit is £250. Unfortunately I was over limit on my fifth month by £22. Before I even know it, I got £43 fine. I called the Customer Service to find out what has happened and the answer is ...? £12 over limit for the fifth month £12 for late payment £ 7 for interest rate £12 over limit for the sixth month (even though I was only late for one day ) Now I asked how come the advert said 56 interest free days or 0% interest for 9 months ... what did they answer? Did you read the terms and conditions? It is a joke right? How many pages are they? plus they are small prints. If we read all the terms and conditions every time we buy something or do something then properly it will be forever. So WATCH OUT FOR NATWEST STUDENT CREDIT CARD. they are not what they say.
